Fiona has been a passionate and peaceful animal advocate all her life, beginning at age five when she was proudly awarded an ‘Animal Defender’ badge from the British Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
To Fiona, there is nothing more important than the wellbeing of the environment and wildlife – Australia’s greatest assets. And it is becoming evident that our own wellbeing is inextricably linked to that of the natural world.
With commercial kangaroo slaughter on the rise, Fiona is deeply concerned about the lack of protection that our wildlife is afforded under the law. Further, knowing that protection overlays are not enough to prevent tree clearing from development, Fiona has seen this displace wildlife in her region. When elected, Fiona will advocate for effective laws which carefully consider planning for nature corridors for wildlife, protect biodiversity and see investment into innovative technologies to protect wildlife and the environment.
Having cared for rescue animals herself, Fiona has seen the impact of inhumane farming practices which are legal in Victoria. This is why she will legislate for shade and shelter to be made mandatory for farm animals - at a minimum.
Beginning Community Services work in Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres in 1990, Fiona has since been involved in disability advocacy, community garden projects and wellbeing initiatives for elderly communities.
As a qualified and experienced crisis counsellor, Fiona is passionate about mental health intervention and providing crisis support for women with children. She has witnessed first-hand that both mental health and disability services are failing – and these are areas that Fiona will push for transformation in order to place people with lived experience first.
Fiona has also spent 20 years actively involved in creating groups within her local community which provide support and social opportunities for all LGBTQIA+ people.
Fiona is running as your candidate to continue creating a better future for all – one where wildlife, forests and natural spaces are protected, animals are treated with respect and all people are able to enjoy happy and healthy lives.
When she isn’t busy campaigning or volunteering, you can find Fiona beginning restoration projects on old wooden treasures with the companionship of her rescue cat Coco.
