Funding to Prevent Family Violence and Assist Victims

Stop Family Violence. Support All Victims.

The AJP will ensure that support services for all victims of family violence will be fully funded. We will also increase funding for prevention and community education programs.

Although government funding to address family violence has increased over the years, there are still gaps, particularly in prevention, service availability (including accommodation services that cater for people fleeing with their family animals), long-term recovery support and programs for diverse groups. During 2024, 101 Australian women and 16 children were lost to violence. On average, one women in Australia is murdered every 4 days. An Australian study found ‘partner pet abuse’ in over half of all relationships affected by family violence.

Key Features

  • Fully fund the current National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–2032
  • Initially, $1 billion for emergency and animal friendly short-term accommodation for victims/survivors of family violence
  • Increase funding for prevention programs to stop family violence before it starts or escalates, which includes addressing the attitudes, cultures, systems and structures that enable it.

  • Help victims to take their beloved family animals with them when they leave violent situations
