Compassionate healthcare leader. Animal justice advocate. Voice for regional communities.
A voice for the voiceless—from hospital wards to the halls of Parliament
Dr Helen Jeges is proud to be the Lead Senate Candidate for the Animal Justice Party in Victoria. A passionate advocate for animal welfare and social justice, Helen lives on Gunaikurnai Country in Sale, in Central Gippsland. She is deeply committed to bringing a compassionate, regional voice to federal politics.
A champion of public health and mental wellbeing
Helen is a Doctor of Paediatric Neuropsychology, working at Latrobe Regional Hospital, one of Gippsland’s largest public healthcare facilities. She provides care to children and families with empathy, professionalism, and unwavering respect. She is a staunch supporter of universal healthcare, with a particular focus on improving mental health services in rural and regional communities.
A lifelong love of animals, rooted in family and action
Growing up in her father’s veterinary clinic, Helen developed a lifelong connection to animals. She is a cruelty-free advocate, deeply involved in animal welfare both professionally and personally. She actively supports and donates to leading organisations like Animals Australia, Animal Liberation Victoria, and the Farm Transparency Project.
Helen also served as Executive Producer of the powerful 2018 documentary Dominion, which laid bare the ethical failures of our treatment of animals.
On the ground with animals in need
Helen volunteers in local wildlife rescue efforts and has cared for countless injured animals across Gippsland. She treats wombats with mange through Mange Management Victoria and fosters greyhounds discarded by the racing industry. Her family includes three beloved animal companions—Ralph the greyhound, Jedi the staghound, and Danny the domestic shorthair cat. Her ‘happy place’ is Liberation Sanctuary, where she spends time with Piggy the dorper sheep and over 140 rescued animals.
A bold, evidence-based political platform
Helen is running for the Senate to fight for real change—for animals, people, and the planet. Her key priorities include:
-
Banning live animal exports
-
Ending wildlife slaughter and factory farming
-
Strengthening animal cruelty laws
-
Subsidising vet care (Veticare) for low-income households
-
Tax and housing reform to ease cost-of-living pressures
-
Prevention-focused responses to family violence
A fierce advocate for climate action
Living in a region devastated by drought, bushfires, flooding, and storms, Helen has seen the impacts of climate change up close. She advocates for:
-
Ending fossil fuel extraction and exports
-
A full transition to a 100% clean energy economy
-
Carbon pricing and investment in plant-based agriculture
-
Regenerative farming and ecosystem restoration
A leader guided by values
Dr Helen Jeges believes a more compassionate and just society is within reach—but only through legislative reform and ethical representation. If elected, she will serve Victoria with integrity, purpose, and a deep commitment to the core values of the Animal Justice Party:
Kindness. Equality. Rationality. Non-violence.
