Anthony Bruno for Williamstown

Anthony is a vegan of ten years, abolitionist and animal rights advocate who lives in the Williamstown area. Speaking up for animals is what Anthony considers his purpose.

Ten years ago, Anthony watched Earthlings. Until then, he had never questioned humanity’s treatment of other animals. Seeing vulnerable animals exploited and killed for human purposes forced him to confront the reality that animals are being subjected to things that no one would want to experience for themselves, and that it was all unnecessary. He became vegan immediately.

Anthony believes most people already oppose cruelty and injustice. His goal is to help people recognise where their actions conflict with their values and make the connection that you cannot respect animals while continuing to use them.

Every Saturday, Anthony volunteers with Vegan Action Melbourne in the Melbourne CBD, having honest and respectful conversations with the public about animal exploitation and the true meaning of veganism. Through this outreach, people regularly commit to becoming vegan. Each person who makes that connection represents another step towards ending animal exploitation, beginning within our communities and our state and ultimately contributing to change far beyond them.

Anthony has a mantra: “I teach the way I’d want to be taught, and I speak up the way I’d want to be spoken for.”

Outside of his advocacy, swimming has also been a major part of Anthony’s life. He has been a swim coach since 2021 and regularly participates in the Williamstown Open Water Challenge, including the 10-kilometre swim. For Anthony, swimming and coaching are opportunities to lead by example, demonstrating that animal exploitation is completely unnecessary for sporting performance.

Anthony is standing for the Animal Justice Party because he has realised the power of using his voice for good, and believes political advocacy is one of the most effective ways he can put that voice to work for animals.

Anthony wants to advocate for the protection and rights of all animals. Locally, he would particularly like to advocate for the protection of sea life in the bay, including working towards Williamstown Beach being free from fishing, spearfishing and other forms of animal exploitation. He would also like to oppose animal-based fundraising at community events and advocate for animal rights wherever he has the opportunity.

Anthony is here for real change. But real change requires educating, listening and understanding. It is through understanding that behaviour changes, and through changing behaviour that society changes.

Anthony intends to be an unstoppable force in that education process.
