Debra Tranter is the Animal Justice Party’s candidate for Bendigo West.
A passionate animal welfare advocate, Debra has spent more than three decades being a voice for those who don’t have one.
As the face of the campaign against puppy farms, Debra first started exposing cruelty within the commercial dog breeding industry in 1994.
In 2010, after rescuing a dog named Oscar from a puppy factory, Debra founded Oscar’s Law, a grassroots campaign that grew into a powerful movement. Through sustained campaigning and lobbying, Oscar's Law secured comprehensive animal welfare legislative reform in Victoria, with new legislation to outlaw puppy farms in 2017.
Debra also worked for several years as Campaign Coordinator with the Coalition Against Duck Shooting during the 1990s. She has also supported numerous animal welfare organisations by assisting with investigations, documenting animal cruelty and bringing hidden practices to public attention.
Alongside animal advocacy, Debra is a registered nurse with extensive experience in aged care management. She now volunteers her time as manager of the Castlemaine cemetery.
