In October 2026, ABC News revealed a seven-month-long investigation by Sheep Advocate Australia into cruelty at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange.
From November 2025 to May 2026, an undercover whistleblower documented routine abuse – largely towards pregnant ewes, birthing mothers and lambs.
The footage the investigator obtained during this time is very confronting.

No shade. Filthy conditions. Cramped cages. Severely injured sheep. Electric prods. Violent abuse. Piles of bodies behind the facility.
One sheep had flystrike so severe that much of their face had been eaten away.
In total, at least 233 sheep died over a 20-day period. And that's only what was caught on camera.
You can only imagine what else happens when no one is watching.
Sheep Advocate Australia have made 81 complaints to Agriculture Victoria in relation to this facility. None have been actioned yet.
This is yet another example of our so-called animal protection system failing animals at every hurdle.
We need the Animal Justice Party in parliament next term to fight for an independent office for animal protection.
But in the meantime, we need to send a clear message to the Agriculture Minister right now.
Email Minister Settle now
Add your name to a pre-written email calling on the government to shut down the Bendigo saleyards immediately and launch an independent investigation into this cruelty.
We need to make sure this can never be allowed to happen again.
