Eve Levens for Mill Park

Eve has lived in the area for 12 years and loves the balance between people and nature here: beautiful green spaces, kilometres of walking and bike paths, abundant wildlife, and a warm, vibrant and culturally diverse community.

She works locally as a clerk across multiple hospital wards and sites. It's a front-facing role where she speaks with and helps people every day. Hospitals can be emotional places. Small acts of kindness or simply taking the time to listen can make a difference. Her degrees in Psychology and Applied Linguistics have strengthened her understanding of people and communication. She uses those skills when helping someone through a difficult experience, communicating with people from non-English-speaking backgrounds, and writing persuasive letters and petitions to advocate for change.

Her psychology studies have shaped her interest in mental health. Mental illness is still surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding, and she believes we need to respond with compassion rather than judgement. She also cares deeply about housing affordability and security — too many people are struggling to find or keep a safe place to live. For Eve, these issues are connected by a simple belief: everyone deserves dignity, security and compassion. For many people, that includes a beloved animal companion.

Animals have always been a huge part of Eve's life. She was raised to treat animals with kindness and dignity, and her family often took in strays and cared for injured animals. She continues to do that today: a one-legged magpie named Peg visits her yard daily for her mealworm treats.

Over the years, she has rescued cats, birds, lizards, chickens, frogs, an echidna and even a three-day-old mouse. Finding this helpless baby mouse in her garden, she wondered: could she save him? He was cold and barely moving. She warmed him in her hands and he twitched! She quickly built a makeshift incubator, learned to care for him, and fed him around the clock. As he grew, she built him enclosures with toys, tubes and treats. They bonded, and he lived to a good old age. He was intelligent, affectionate and full of personality. Caring for him strengthened her conviction that an animal's capacity to experience life should matter more than the species to which they belong.

Reading the work of philosopher Peter Singer, whose writing on animal ethics explores why the suffering of animals deserves moral consideration, helped her put these experiences into a broader context. That belief strengthened her commitment to animal advocacy and ultimately led her to the Animal Justice Party.

She has spoken at council forums advocating for free desexing and microchipping, an end to the killing of impounded animals, and stronger protections for wildlife. If elected, she will continue that advocacy with greater influence, working for stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws, greater protection for wildlife, and a reduction in animal exploitation. She wants to help build a kinder, fairer community where animals, people and the environment are treated with compassion and respect.
