India Rose for Brunswick

India is a Brunswick-based small business owner, a community services professional and a lifelong advocate for animals and the environment.

Born and raised in Tasmania, India has lived in Victoria for 15 years. Her passion for animal welfare and environmental causes began in childhood, and as she grew older, she connected those beliefs to a broader philosophy and way of life that called her to take action. She became vegetarian of her own volition as a child and developed a particular interest in the laws and social norms governing the protection of non-human animals, especially the testing of cosmetics on animals. She wrote letters to her local newspaper and Members of Parliament on the issue.

Moving to Melbourne connected India with a community of people who not only supported animal rights in principle but actively fought for them. Welcomed into the vegan activist community, she was supported to protest and run campaigns, while also enjoying the lighter side of veganism: wonderful food, passionate people and gorgeous animals.

India now owns and operates Somewhere Soft, an NDIS support service. Before starting her own business, she spent more than six years in the community services sector, with experience across youth work, homelessness services, youth arts programming and advocacy. She has a strong background in crisis response, case management and community engagement. Her work with a diverse mix of vulnerable yet resilient members of the community equips her to respond to the needs, concerns and rights of her constituents, both human and non-human.

India believes that non-human animals and nature are not separate from humanity, but part of one interconnected thread of life. If elected, she pledges to dedicate her time to listening, following up and acting on the issues that matter to her community. Passionate, pragmatic, determined and positive, she believes in thinking globally and acting locally.

She is guided by a sentiment attributed to both Gandhi and Mandela: that the way a society treats its most vulnerable and marginalised members is a true reflection of its moral integrity.
