Jan Heald is the Animal Justice Party's candidate for Evelyn, bringing more than 30 years of experience as an advocate for animals, the environment and her local community.

With a professional background in customer service and public relations, Jan has devoted much of her life to volunteering for causes she believes in. She served as Secretary of the Australian Wildlife Protection Council for 14 years, has volunteered with the RSPCA, and has played an active role in numerous community initiatives in the Evelyn area. She was President of the Friends of the Mt Evelyn Aqueduct Trail and has been involved with a range of local environment groups, working to protect the natural beauty, biodiversity and amenity of the area for residents and animals alike.

Jan has been a member of the Animal Justice Party since its inception in 2009. Her long-standing interest in politics has always been driven by a strong sense of social justice, encompassing human rights, environmental protection, and standing up for those who are vulnerable or unable to speak for themselves - including animals.

Having lived in the Evelyn electorate for 19 years, Jan values the region's unique combination of native bushland, abundant wildlife and strong sense of community. She believes protecting Evelyn's distinctive leafy environment is essential and is deeply concerned about the impacts of inappropriate development and suburban sprawl on native habitats and local biodiversity.

A passionate advocate for Victoria's wildlife, Jan is committed to ending the commercial killing of kangaroos and replacing outdated approaches to wildlife management with humane, evidence-based solutions. She supports stronger protections for native flora and fauna, greater investment in habitat restoration and wildlife corridors, and practical measures to reduce wildlife road trauma through improved planning, wildlife crossings, better signage and data collection.

Jan is also committed to strengthening animal protection laws, modernising animal welfare legislation, and increasing support for the wildlife carers, rescuers and sanctuary operators who dedicate countless volunteer hours to caring for injured, orphaned and abandoned animals. She believes these compassionate individuals deserve greater recognition and practical support from government.

Alongside her commitment to animals and the environment, Jan believes governments must spend public money responsibly, support local business, and ensure communities have access to services that address family violence and social disadvantage. She believes elected representatives should always put their communities first by listening, acting with integrity and making decisions that deliver genuine public benefit.

Jan is standing for the Animal Justice Party because she believes kindness, equality, rationality and non-violence should be at the heart of political decision-making. She is committed to being a strong voice for the people, animals and environment of Evelyn while helping to build a kinder, fairer and more sustainable Victoria.
