Sinan Okatan was born in Melbourne's north and has spent most of his life growing up there. He and his wife Emine have called the Yan Yean district home for the past 5 years, where they have since grown their family to include their beautiful son, Alposman, and their precious companion, Latte.

Growing up through the drought of the 2000s, Sinan has always been conscious of human impact on the climate and environment. His time studying construction management locally, and engineering abroad, was also an eye-opening experience into the impacts of construction on human and animal welfare, and sparked his interest in waste management. He has a background working on waste and recycling policy development, and currently works as a project manager in the horticulture sector, managing the delivery of greenhouse climate and fertigation control projects.

As he has matured, his concerns have expanded to include welfare not only for humans but also non-human animals, better protections of our environment, mental health awareness and action, and social justice. As a father, he is constantly asking himself "what sort of world do I want my son to grow up in?" He wants a world free of cruelty and judgement; where housing is affordable, work is fair and meaningful, mental and physical health is not sacrificed for profits, and where we coexist with our natural environment.

Sinan has a strong desire to be more actively involved with his community and to take the lead in serving those in Yan Yean — listening to and understanding the biggest issues they're facing, taking a stand to combat them, and standing up against harm and injustices towards humans and the most vulnerable members of the community, animals, and our diverse environment and habitats.

His focus is to provide relief for the cost-of-living pressures so many are feeling. He aims to address housing security and affordability, support the introduction of subsidised veterinary care, promote local infrastructure development that won't harm animals or the green wedge, improve community health outcomes, and reduce crime by supporting at-risk groups. He wants to work together with local farmers to support a transition to more sustainable agriculture practices and enable them to continue working on their land for many more generations.
