Tamara Champion for Mornington

Tamara Champion is an environmental scientist, ecologist and long-time Mornington Peninsula resident who is standing as a candidate for the Mornington electorate to be a voice for animals, nature and the local community.

Tamara has lived on the Mornington Peninsula since the age of seven and currently resides in Rosebud. She grew up in Rye with her parents and their rescue dogs, developing a deep appreciation for the Peninsula’s natural environment from a young age.

During high school she studied Outdoor Education, where a teacher inspired her to value nature intrinsically and deepened her connection to the natural world. Growing up in a Buddhist family also shaped her compassion for animals and respect for all living beings. At 14, Tamara became vegetarian and soon transitioned to a vegan lifestyle, a commitment she has maintained for over a decade.

She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology) and has spent the past 10 years working in bushland restoration on the Mornington Peninsula, helping regenerate native ecosystems and protect local biodiversity.

Tamara has been actively involved in animal advocacy and environmental volunteering both locally and internationally, including roles with the Animal Justice Party, Byron Bay Animal Advocates, Owl and Pussycat Farm Sanctuary, Crystal Ocean Wildlife Shelter, and conservation programs in Costa Rica. She has also contributed to local Landcare and Friends groups and supported campaigns to protect wildlife in Victoria’s Central Highlands.

Tamara believes the Mornington Peninsula is one of Victoria’s most special places, defined by its beautiful beaches, bushland and wildlife. Protecting this environment was the driving force behind her decision to enter politics.

Tamara is standing as an Animal Justice Party candidate after years of advocacy and study convinced her that politics is one of the most powerful ways to create systemic change for animals and the environment. She is deeply committed to animal welfare and believes the treatment of animals across many industries is one of the most urgent and confronting issues of our time.

Determined to be a voice for the voiceless in parliament, Tamara is committed to continuing her work in advocating for stronger protections and an end to unnecessary suffering, including:

  • Tougher penalties for animal cruelty and neglect
  • Protecting native habitat and wildlife corridors
  • Reversing species extinction
  • Improving access to affordable veterinary care
  • Advocating for the welfare of farmed animals

At home, Tamara cares for her adopted blind dachshund puppy, who continues to inspire her compassion and advocacy.
