AJP Win: Major Boost for Accessible Vet Care in Victoria

AJP Advocacy Secures Major Boost for Accessible Vet Care

Affordable and accessible vet care is critical, yet out of reach for many families. Vet bills can be overwhelming, forcing some to delay or forgo essential treatment for their animals. No one should have to choose between financial security and the health of their beloved companion.

That’s why Georgie Purcell MP and the Animal Justice Party (AJP) have been pushing for improvements to the Victorian Government’s Animal Welfare Fund grants—and today, we’re seeing the results.

The newly announced grant round is the biggest investment yet and includes key changes that AJP fought for:

Extended application period – groups now have a full month to apply, instead of missing out within days. This gives smaller, volunteer-run organisations—who often don’t have dedicated grant writers—a fairer shot at receiving funding.
Larger grants – more funding available across the board to ensure critical services can expand and improve.
Accessible vet care funding – with:
💰 Up to $50,000 for not-for-profit and community vet clinics to upgrade equipment and expand services.
💰 Up to $200,000 for vets to establish low-cost clinics in areas of need.

Why This Win Matters

Many families are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, and when an unexpected vet bill arises, the financial pressure can be immense. In some cases, animals suffer because their guardians simply cannot afford urgent medical treatment.

Not-for-profit and community vet clinics play a crucial role in keeping animals healthy, preventing suffering, and ensuring veterinary care is not just for those who can afford premium services. But these clinics are often underfunded and overstretched. The expanded funding gives them the chance to invest in new equipment, expand services, and provide better care to more animals in need.

The grant also paves the way for new low-cost clinics to open in areas where vet care is scarce or too expensive. These clinics will help reduce pressure on existing animal welfare organisations, ensuring fewer animals are left without the treatment they deserve.

A Step Towards Veticare

While this funding boost is a major win, AJP won’t stop here. We are committed to fighting for Veticare—a universal, government-supported veterinary care system. Just like Medicare ensures all humans can access healthcare, Veticare would guarantee that no animal goes without treatment due to cost.

This win proves that progress is possible when we push for change. But we need to keep up the fight to ensure long-term solutions are implemented.
