Proving that care and compassion isn't out of fashion, the Animal Justice Party is proud to announce Dr Helen Jeges as its lead senate candidate for Victoria in the 2025 Federal Election, campaigning for animals, people and the planet.
Dr Helen is a doctor of Paediatric Neuropsychology at Latrobe Regional Hospital in Gippsland where she provides high-quality care to children and families, always treating them with respect, empathy, and compassion. Dr Jeges firmly believes that animals, like humans, deserve the same fundamental respect and care. She has devoted her career to the public health system and is a staunch advocate for universal healthcare, particularly the reform of mental health services in rural and regional areas.
Having grown up in her father’s veterinary clinic, her commitment to the welfare of animals, both wildlife and domestic, continued into adulthood where she remains involved in local wildlife rescue efforts, including rescuing and transporting injured wildlife and volunteering with Mange Management Victoria to treat infected wombats. She also is involved in domestic animal rescue, providing foster care for greyhounds discarded by the racing industry.
Helen is committed to achieving lasting change for animals and humans alike. As part of her political platform, she campaigns for a ban on live animal exports (including greyhounds and an end to wildlife slaughter.
Dr Jeges also advocates for policies that promote equality, such as subsidised veterinary care for low-income households, affordable housing reform to ensure that every individual, family and their animals have a secure roof over their heads and tax reform to deliver a fairer system.
Helen stands for the preservation of our only home - this planet and is campaigning to redirect existing subsidies away from polluting and destructive industries and towards biodiversity protection and restoration. She seeks to protect and rewild habitats and build a future powered by sustainable energy.
Let's get behind Helen!
We'll be honest, elections take a lot of hard work and cost a lot of money. It's a $2000 fee per candidate just to get on the ballot paper (more than five times the cost for a state election candidate) and then there are advertising and printing costs! We're calling on all our members to chip in for our campaign not only so we can give Dr Helen and the animals our best shot, but so we can nominate some lower house candidates to support her in some key seats. You can donate on Helen's candidate page here
Want to do even more for animals?
In order to put animals on the agenda, we need volunteers in every corner of Victoria. Not only for election day but we need help with logistics, marketing, fundraising, social media and so much more!
