June Wrap-Up

As we reach the halfway point of the year, June has highlighted something important: when people speak up for animals, decision-makers listen.

This month, community advocacy helped stop a proposed puppy farm in Elphinstone and pause plans for a kangaroo cull at Benalla Golf Club. These outcomes are a testament to the power of everyday people taking action for animals.

With the Victorian election fast approaching, it's also a timely reminder of how important political representation is for animals. Having Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell in Parliament means animals have a dedicated voice at the decision-making table every single day. Without strong representation, many of the wins we've achieved, and much of the advocacy happening on behalf of animals, simply wouldn't be possible.

Thank you for being part of a community that refuses to stay silent when animals need a voice. Together, we really are creating meaningful change for animals. šŸ¾šŸ’œ

General News & Updates

🐾 Greyhound Racing Update
Sadly, Demon Yogi and Black Nevera became the 97th and 98th greyhounds to suffer leg fractures in Victoria this year. Both were euthanised due to their injuries. So far, 14 greyhounds have died on Victorian racetracks in 2026, making Victoria the deadliest state for greyhounds.Ā

Together, We Made a Difference

🦘 Halting the Kangaroo Cull

Community voices made a difference this month, with Benalla Golf Club withdrawing its plans to kill kangaroos living on the course following significant public opposition and advocacy.

While this is a positive step and a welcome reprieve for the kangaroos, the proposal has been paused rather than permanently abandoned. The situation has also highlighted broader concerns about Victoria's Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW) permit system, which allows native animals to be killed under certain circumstances. 🐶 Proposed Puppy Farm Defeated

Following significant community advocacy and public pressure, a proposed puppy farm in Elphinstone was withdrawn. This outcome demonstrates the power of people coming together to speak up for animals.

While this is a welcome win, the campaign also highlighted ongoing loopholes in Victoria's puppy farming laws. Although legislation was introduced to phase out large-scale puppy farms, ministerial exemptions continue to allow some breeders to keep up to 10 fertile female dogs.

We will continue advocating for stronger protections to ensure the laws designed to end puppy farming are working as intended. Read more about Puppy Farm Loopholes

Georgie's Work in Parliament

Georgie Purcell is Victoria’s only Animal Justice Party MP, and she’s using that seat to make it count. Inside Parliament, Georgie doesn't waste a minute. She's been working harder than ever to represent animals, people and planet in the place where decisions are made.

Here’s a quick look at some of what she’s been up to this month.

Getting Duck Shooting Back on the Political Agenda

This month, Georgie escalated urgent concerns about the regulation of duck shooting in Victoria by the Game Management Authority (GMA), at a time when the Government is actively progressing changes that could significantly expand its powers.

A covert recording exposed a GMA official going so far as to admit that the agency is intentionally targeting duck rescuers, helping shooters sidestep safety laws, breaching child firearm safety recommendations, and ignoring illegal shooter behaviour.

This isn't the first time the GMA has come under fire for its corrupt culture.

Despite this, the Allan Government is right now trying to push the dangerous Outdoor Recreation Victoria Bill through Parliament. If passed,Ā it will not only entrench this rotten culture – it will make it worse.

The establishment of Outdoor Recreation Victoria would not just combine promotion and regulation in a model set up to protect shooters – it would give these very same officers, all of who have had their jobs guaranteed, even more extraordinary powers. We already know from the secret recording that they are actively targeting rescuers – and this piece of legislation has increased penalties – including imprisonment.

Right now, there's a narrow and critical window to apply public pressure to the Allan Government to drop this dangerous legislation. Georgie is doing everything she can - but she needs your help.

Use our simple email template to urge the government to:

  1. Immediately abandon their legislation to create Outdoor Recreation Victoria.

  2. Conduct an urgent independent inquiry into the Game Management Authority.

  3. Ban duck shooting in Victoria.

Calling for a Ban on Live Lamb Cutting

Georgie joined FOUR PAWS to deliver a petition signed by more than 500,000 people from around the world calling for an end to live lamb cutting (mulesing). Every year, more than 10 million Australian lambs are subjected to this painful procedure, despite humane alternatives already being available.

Georgie is calling on the government to end this outdated practice and ensure Australia is no longer the last country in the world where live lamb cutting continues.

Defending Dingoes

This month in Parliament, Georgie raised urgent concerns about dingoes in north-west Victoria, calling on the Minister for Environment to guarantee that they will remain protected.

This call followed reports of a deceased dingo being struck by a vehicle and discarded on the roadside, prompting concerns about the future of this iconic native species.

In her speech, Georgie highlighted the important ecological role dingoes play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and warned against reducing their value to debates about genetic purity alone. With uncertainty remaining around whether existing protections will be maintained, Georgie is calling for clear commitments from the government that dingoes will continue to be recognised and protected in our state.

Protecting Victoria’s Native Forests

Georgie hosted a special screening of the short documentary Forest Country in Parliament, alongside key forest protection groups.

The film details the way that native forest logging has been allowed to continue through various loopholes - and the scale of the destruction of some of Victoria’s most significant habitats through a system that is secretive by design.

Georgie is proud to work alongside advocacy organisations that do such important work to shed a light on loophole logging, and the fight to protect our state’s magnificent forests.

Working for animals, people and planet

Georgie and her team don't waste a single minute fighting for causes that other parties simply ignore. Outside of the above campaigns, Georgie has also been busy this month:

  • Calling for the closure of puppy farming loopholes in honour of the passing of her rescue dog Aggy
  • Urging the new Minister for Environment to meet with dedicated kangaroo advocates and learn their plight across Victoria
  • Reporting the most recent victims of the greyhound racing industry
  • Questioning the government on tree felling operations in a declared swift parrot habitat
  • Speaking out on job cuts at Zoos Victoria, which will affect wildlife rescue and extinction prevention
  • Demanding justice for geese who were deliberately run down and killed in Malmsbury
  • Pushing for investment in key infrastructure in Georgie's electorate
  • Holding the government to its commitment to fix our broken Wildlife Act this year (following their disgraceful decision to abandon the Animal Care and Protection Bill)
  • Highlighting the threat of bird flu in the country, just days before the H5 bird flu reached Australia
  • Calling for an end to jumps racing in Victoria - the only state to still allow the deadly 'sport'

    ... And so much more!

Holding the Seat for Animals

The honest reality is that this State Election will be tough. Victoria is seeing a more fragmented political landscape, where the rise of smaller parties and the far-right is making outcomes increasingly unpredictable.

There is a very real risk that Georgie may not be re-elected.

And if she isn’t, there will be no voice for animals in Parliament.

That’s why this moment matters. Running a strong campaign takes significant resources, a committed team, and absolutely relies on us reaching voters across Victoria. If you want animals to keep their only voice in Parliament, please consider making a donation to support Georgie’s re-election campaign. Every contribution will directly help keep this work going when it’s needed most.

End Taxpayer Subsidies for Greyhound Racing

Every year, millions of taxpayer dollars are funnelled into Victoria's greyhound racing industry, an industry where dogs continue to suffer serious injuries and deaths in the pursuit of profit.

In Victoria alone, 48 greyhounds were killed on racetracks last year, while more than 3,000 suffered injuries from collisions, falls and other racing-related incidents.

An independent Parliamentary Budget Office analysis commissioned by the Animal Justice Party found that Victoria could save more than $450 million over the next ten years by ending government subsidies to the greyhound racing industry.

Victorians should not be forced to bankroll an industry that causes so much suffering to animals.

Join us in calling on the Victorian Government to end taxpayer subsidies for the so-called sport, and redirect public money into essential community services.

Counting Down to November

The State Election is now only months away in November, and there’s not much time left to get ready. Every week between now and then matters, because building visibility, momentum, and support doesn’t happen overnight.

We’re continuing to announce new Animal Justice Party candidates across Victoria, with a total of 15 people so far stepping up to represent their communities and animals:

Meet our Latest Candidates

Ā More candidates are being announced each week, so keep an eye out - there’s a strong chance your local area will soon have someone representing the issues you care about.

At the same time, there are still a number of priority seats where we urgently need candidates. These electorates are strategically important to Georgie’s re-election campaign and to strengthening our overall position in Parliament. Strong results in these areas help boost Georgie’s vote and increase our leverage to negotiate with other parties for stronger animal protection commitments after the election.

We're still seeking candidates for these priority seats:

Mildura, Murray Plains, Euroa, Shepparton, Yan Yean, Ovens Valley, Sunbury, Mill Park, Western Metropolitan (Upper House), and Western Victoria (Upper House).

National Animal Rights Day

This month marked National Animal Rights Day (7 June), a reminder of the scale of suffering experienced by animals in Australia’s food system - much of it out of sight, and shaped by laws that still prioritise production over welfare.

For farmed animals in Victoria and across the country, this is not abstract. It is the reality of industrial systems where millions of animals live and die under conditions most people would find unacceptable if they were fully visible.

For the Animal Justice Party, days like this are not symbolic, they're a reminder of why we exist in the first place. To confront these realities directly and push for stronger legal protections for animals whose reality is too easily ignored.

National Animal Rights Day asks us to reflect. Our role is to turn that reflection into action.

Membership is what keeps this work going between election cycles - not just the big moments you see in Parliament, but the day-to-day work of research, policy, campaigning, and holding decision-makers to account. It’s also what gives Georgie and the Animal Justice Party the stability to keep showing up and pushing for change, even when it’s difficult or unpopular.

What ties all of this together is simple: animals don’t have a voice in the decisions that shape their lives unless we put one there. Georgie’s work in Parliament, the upcoming election, and the conversations happening in the community all create that reality. Thank you for being part of making sure those voices are heard.
